Staff Accountant - San Diego (142465-563)

The primary purpose of this position is to prepare and maintain the financial accounting records for two of the three Premier Insurance companies (Premier Insurance Exchange, RRG (PRx), and American Diversified Reinsurance, Ltd (ADRL)). This position is responsible for performing the A/P, A/R, cash, and billing functions as well as performing the monthly investment reconciliations and analyzing the companies’ equity holdings in accordance with FAS 115 to ensure there are no impairment losses.

This position will also be responsible for managing the month-end close process for both PRx and ADRL and providing a completed financial package to the Assistant Controller for review within a tight deadline. This will include preparing monthly journal entries and supporting schedules, and updating the balance sheets, income statements, statements of equity and cash flow statements for the above insurance companies.

This position will assist in the preparation of the yearly budget by providing detailed analyses of certain expense line items to help project future expenses.

This position will also assist in the annual audit with the companies’ independent auditors. Responsibilities regarding the audit will include providing supporting schedules and key variance explanations to the independent auditors and maintaining a yearly audit binder for future reference.

This position will also be in charge of special projects as directed by the Assistant Controller and VP of Finance.

Major Accountabilities

Financial reporting for PRx and ADRL

Investment accounting and reporting, including other than temporary impairment analysis

A/R and billing, A/P and cash management

Preparation of yearly budget and other projects including process documentation

Annual audit


Required Skills




Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance

3 – 5 years experience.

Moderate experience (2-4 years) in public accounting with property and casualty insurance experience preferred and/or equivalent experience with commensurate responsibility preferably with a P&C direct writer.

Understanding of internal controls and the control environment preferred

Knowledge and Skills

Demonstrated ability to work under tight deadlines with minimal or no supervision and with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail

Ability to manage and complete multiple tasks within a given timeframe

Excellent verbal and written communication and strong interpersonal and organization skills

An understanding of internal controls and the controls environment.

Working knowledge of GAAP and statutory accounting principles

Ability to use good judgment with a high level of discretion and confidentiality

Proficient in MS Office (Word, Excel and PowerPoint) and knowledge of Lawson or other general ledger system
