Staff Accountant - Payroll

POSITION PURPOSE Assists in supervising the centralized payroll accounting function to include timely reconciliation's for high activity G/L accounts, weekly payroll, payroll taxes payable, and various payroll benefits accounts as reported by 5,800+ U.S. stores. Insures that reconciliation's and adjustments are recorded timely and in compliance with company policies and procedures, and GAAP. Assists in the month end close process for the payroll department. Performs special projects related to the payroll accounting function.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1.Implements appropriate accounting controls for the recording and reconciliation of general ledger/account activity within the payroll reporting function. Communicates and explains accounting variances as required to Financial Reporting Department and outside auditors.
2.Assist in the month end close process including recording, reviewing and approval of journal entries. Assists in the development of payroll reporting policies and procedures to ensure process is efficient and effective.
3.Facilitates review process to ensure that the quality of work performed is in compliance with standards jointly established by the Manager-Payroll. Assists with the standardization of procedures within the department to ensure efficiency.
4.Implements controls and supervises follow-up routines which ensure that timely reconciliation's and adjustments within payroll reporting occurs for 5,800+ stores within a monthly accounting cycle.
5.Assists in the supervision of monthly reconciliation of account activity associated with all forms of benefits accounting.
6.Assists with training and developing departmental staff.
7.Assists in developing and implementing procedures to ensure the efficient and timely resolution of issues. Ensures that an atmosphere of cooperation and efficient customer service is provided to all areas of the company. Ensures that departmental staff provides timely, accurate and helpful responses to all inquiries and that an adequate number of trained staff is available to provide assistance. Responds to and resolves issues and questions beyond the Team Leads' expertise. Communicates and responds to inquiries regarding payroll accounting from Store Managers and franchisees to division and corporate accounting management, operations management and outside and internal auditors.
8.Performs varying levels of financial analysis and special projects from payroll accounting data as requested by Supervisor or operations and financial management using Excel or other query tools available in Oracle applications.
9.May manage Payroll Accounting Group indirectly. Assist in training, counseling and evaluating staff.
10.Performs other related duties as requested by management.


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Position requires knowledge of accounting principles normally acquired through completion of a Bachelor's degree plus 4 to 5 years of related experience, preferably payroll accounting, including lead experience. CPA candidate a plus.
