Major Function

The Senior Underwriting Technician is responsible for providing direct support to the Senior Underwriter as it relates to the handling of policies and to the workflow needs of the team. Must be able to prioritize and work under pressure.

Essential Functions
Preliminary review and analysis of new business submissions. Involves review of applications for completeness, trending of past losses and following up for missing information.
Issuance of formal proposals in accordance with Senior Underwriter instructions and department guidelines and update of same with applicable follow-up information. Once coverage is bound, responsible for proper binder issuance of large accounts. Includes proper issuance of binder and account profile form. Responsible for proper file documentation and gathering of all necessary forms and applications.
Coordinates and maintains Large Risk renewal proposals. Responsible for initiating gathering of renewal information. Includes timely issuance of renewal proposals and follow up.
Review and processing of incoming mail, renewals and other correspondence in accordance with individual criteria as established by the Senior Underwriter in support of the team.Assignment, Review and Approval of Work

The Senior Underwriting Technician receives written and verbal instructions from the Senior Underwriter. The Senior Underwriter answers questions regarding work and approves same.
Responsibility and Decision Making Authority
The Senior Underwriting Technician will be responsible for coordination of pending renewals, new business accounts and handling of incoming mail and correspondence.
The Senior Underwriting Technician will contribute expertise and feedback for improvements to procedures, workflow and computer processing.
Work Direction of OthersThere is no responsibility for the work direction of others in this position.
REQUIREMENTS
Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Ability
Detail oriented.
Ability to understand workflow and how actions taken impact other areas of the department.
Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
Ability to learn new procedures and adapt to a changing environment.
In addition to understanding procedures implemented in the Underwriting Department, candidate must have an understanding of Claims, Audit, Accounting, Safety and Marketing processes to accurately and efficiently respond.
Working knowledge of NCCI scopes manual, basic workers comp manual, and company’s underwriting guidelines and hazards manual.
Working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel.
Ability to interface with internal & external customers in a highly professional manner.
Excellent communication skills, verbal and written.Education, Training and Experience Required
High school diploma or equivalent.
Three years previous experience in a business environment or two years of workers compensation experience. Prior agency experience preferred.
Successfully complete the “Introduction to Underwriting” course within 18 months and pass test.
Successfully complete the “Basic Workers Compensation” course within 12 months of hire.
