Sales Tax Analyst
POSITION PURPOSE Provide assistance and support to the Sales and Use Tax Manager for all tasks in assigned area of responsibility.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Ensures the Retail Information System is updated per federal, state, county, city or other taxing authorities in all tax-related matters. Requires research and review on a weekly basis of updates to tax regulations and rates, and then performing input and all maintenance of the tax portion of the Retail Information System based on findings. Research may require communication with the appropriate taxing authorities to obtain a ruling on issues in question.
2. Manage sales/ use tax audits between 7-Eleven, Inc., and various state/ local taxing jurisdictions. Communicate directly with auditors to arrange audits, gather audit documents, assemble and/ or analyze work papers, charts and other complicated tax documents. Assist the Sales and Use Tax Manager in the review of audits, negotiation of audit settlements and preparation of protests as necessary by researching tax laws and preparing drafts of the protests.
3. Work closely with 7-Eleven departments such as Accounts Payable, Property Accounting, Maintenance Accounting, Construction and outside vendors to ensure appropriate sales/ use taxes are paid/ accrued in compliance with current tax laws.
4. Communicate with taxing jurisdictions, vendors, and 7-Eleven corporate and franchise personnel responding to sales/ use tax questions and bringing potential liability issues to the Sales and Use Tax Manager's attention in an effort to diffuse them before they become real issues.
5. Maintain and reconcile corporate account 2403, Sales Tax Accruals, on a monthly basis.
6. Assist in the preparation of tax returns as needed to insure proper, timely filing of same. This is not a main function of this job, rather a support function during heavy activity of tax returns. Must have knowledge of, and be able to, perform this task as needed.
7. Performs other duties and responsibilities as required by management.
Job Requirements
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS
Requires a Bachelor's degree in tax management/accounting, business or law. 7-Eleven, Inc., field accounting experience is a plus to understand the relationship between the company's accounting and tax functions, particularly as they relate to field operations. Requires either a minimum of 3-4 years of internal accounting related experience or 5-7 years of external tax experience.
Position requires excellent verbal and written communication skills. Position requires basic to advanced personal computer skills (Microsoft Office, Corpsales Tax Reporting System) to create reports and word processing documents, writing or modifying text to communicate information where use of precise language musts be used to avoid misunderstanding. Must have the ability to analyze account entries and adjustments. Requires ability to use mathematical skills to accurately calculate tax percentPosition requires minimal travel to attend audits.
CONTACTS
Internal
Has regular contact with various departments within the corporate office in regards to the sales/ use tax payment/ accrual process. In addition, working with the auditors would also entail contact with persons both within and without the Corporate office in gathering information and identifying issues. Contact is exchange of information in a timely manner and resolution of problems which may require research and communication with external sources.
External
Has regular contact with various taxing authorities and jurisdictions in handling inquiries and performing research. In addition, has regular contact with State and Local auditors during audits to respond to questions and exchange information.
INNOVATION
Uses innovation to interpret and adapt tax regulations for 7-Eleven, Inc. Required to identify and promote or dispute tax issues in relation to audits and provide manager with recommendations.
DECISIONS
Makes decisions and formulates solutions based on general business guidelines.
IMPACT
If incorrect decisions are made, the impact could be felt financially through lost savings potentials, penalties and interest on audits or late payments, or overpaid taxes.
MANAGING RELATIONSHIPS/PLANNING
This job has no direct supervisory function. Responsible for own work which includes assigned small to mid-size projects. Projects being managed would be under the review of the Sales and Use Tax Manager.
