General Accounting Accountant

American Water, the largest water services provider in North America, serving more than 18 million customers, with activities in 29 U.S. states, Puerto Rico, and Canada, has an exciting opportunity at our corporate Headquarters in Voorhees, NJ, for a General Accounting Accountant.The primary responsibility of this position is for a complete and accurate general ledger accounting system in compliance with generally accepted accounting principles, regulatory practices and company policy. Additionally responsible for financial analysis and report preparation.Key Accountabilities:Process information within the General Accounting area timely, accurately and in accordance with operational, customer service and service level agreements.Process information within the General Accounting area timely, accurately and in accordance with operational, customer service and service level agreements.Prepare and maintain accounting ledgers, journals, worksheets, schedules, financial statements and reports, studies and analyses, as appropriate.Assist with the monthly, quarterly and year-end close processes, including completion of journal entries, account reconciliation, and variance analysis.Deliver timely and accurate accounting and financial information to Corporate Accounting, Tax Accounting and/or Utility Subsidiaries for accounting, finance, tax and commission reporting.Handle allocations, inter-company billings and account reconciliation.Assist with accounting associated with O&M contacts.Prepare routine and special requests and reports for internal management, auditors, Utility Subsidiaries and regulatory agencies
REQUIREMENTS
Knowledge:
Knowledge of GAAP, regulatory practices, and company policy.Knowledge sufficient to perform at entry professional level.Knowledge of Microsoft Office products and productivity tools (e.g. word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, database, Lotus Notes).Prior knowledge and experience with JD Edwards, SAP, Orcom, or other ERP software, a plus.Skills:
Excellent quantitative, analytical and problem solving skills.Good written and verbal communications skills.Excellent interpersonal skills (e.g. listening, tact, flexibility, “service orientation”).Ability to handle confidential or sensitive information in an appropriate and professional manner.Excellent planning, time management and organizing skills.
Ability to work independently and in teams as needed.Technical:
Working knowledge of Microsoft Office products and advanced knowledge of spreadsheet software required.Knowledge and experience with JDEdwards, Orcom, or other ERP systems a plus.
Six months to three years experience.Prior corporate and/or multi-subsidiary experience desired.Education:
BA degree in Accounting required
1 year prior business related experience preferred
